Day 1/2: Arrival at Zvartnots International airport. Transfer to the hotel. Short rest. Yerevan City tour – Erebuni Museum - Genocide Museum Breakfast at the hotel. Tour around Yerevan, including Erebuni museum. Yerevan the capital of Armenia is a very beautiful and small neat town. Archaeological evidence indicates that a military fortress called Erebuni (Էրեբունի) stood on Yerevan's site as far back as the 8th century BC. In 782 B.C the Urartian king Argishti the first founded Erebuni the military and administrative center on the place of the present-day Yerevan. The city of Yerevan is 210 square kilometers (82 square miles) in size. There are a lot of attractions in Yerevan that are worth seeing when visiting Armenia. Visit to the Memorial park and museum of the victims of Genocide. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. Day 3: Yerevan - Etchmiadzin – Zvartnots – Sardarapat Breakfast at the hotel. Srart tour to the town of Echmiadzin. Echmiadzin is the center of the Armenian Church. Here is the location of Echmiadzin Cathedral, which is the most ancient Christian temple of Armenia. The cathedral was built in 301-303 by Grigor the Enlightener, the first bishop of Armenians. Visit to the churches of Hripsime (7th century) and Gayane, which are situated not far from the cathedral and are named after the saint nuns Hripsime and Gayane, the followers of Jesus Christ. Continue tour to the ruins of Zvartnots Temple (7th century) which is listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Zvartnots is an outstanding monument of world architecture, an evidence of the high level of the development of the artistic and engineering thought in the 7th-century Armenia. The cathedral had been standing for about 300 years and was destroyed by a disastrous earthquake. But even in ruins it has a majestic beauty. Continue the way to Sardarapat Memorial which is located in Armavir 25 km from Etchmiadzin. In 1968 during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Sardarapt that took place in May 22-26, 1918 a memorial park was laid out on the spot of the battlefield. Return to Yerevan. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. Day 4: Yerevan – Tsagkhadzor – Lake Sevan – Noraduz Breakfast at the hotel. Start tour to Tsagkhadzor, the most picturesque place in Kotayk region. "The Ravine of Flowers" as Tsagkhadzor is translated into English is on the eastern slope of Mount Teghenis and is a famous winter sport center. There is a rope-way in Tsaghkadzor which goes high up to Alibey Mountain and from there you can slide down with skies and toboggans if it’s winter. If it’s summer you can enjoy from the summit of the mountain the splendid panorama of much of Armenia. Tsaghkadzor with its colorful foliage is popular not only in winter; in all seasons it is a resort for picnickers and hikers. In Tsaghkadzor there are historical and architectural buildings like church Kecharis, which is an 11th-century memorial stand. Continue the way to Lake Sevan. About 70 miles north of Yerevan sits Lake Sevan the largest alpine in the world. This huge mountain lake which takes up to 5% of Armenia's surface area and is about 2,000 meters above sea level is one of the highest among the freshwater lakes in the world. Some three dozen of streams pour into it and only one river origins from the lake – Hrazdan River, which flows through the heart of Armenia, Yerevan city. With its history and scenery Lake Sevan is among the most inviting destinations in the world. There is a monastery on the shore of Sevan Lake. Sevan monastery was established in an island on the lake in the 9th century. The last monk left it in the 1930’s since then the lake water level lowered and the monastery now sits on a peninsula. Drive to Noraduz – the old cemetery with numerous khachkars (cross-stones). Return back to Yerevan. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. Day 5: Yerevan - Khor Virap - Areni village - Noravank Breakfast at the hotel. Excursion tour to Khor Virap, from where you can have the best view of Biblical Mount Ararat. Khor Virap is one of the popular destinations in Armenia for a number of reasons, primarily because it is where Grigor Luisavorich (St. Gregory the Enlightener)-the first Catholicos of all Armenians- was imprisoned. This caused the convertion of Armenia into the first official Christian nation in the world in 301. Here you can descend the underground chamber where Gregory the Enlightner was imprisoned for 13 years. This monastery rests atop of a little hill in an otherwise very flat Ararat Valley. When you arrive you will be very close to Mt. Ararat. Continue tour to Noravank monastery of 13th c. through Areni village which is the main wine producing district in Armenia. Noravank is listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Noravank ("New monastery") was founded by Bishop Hovhannes, who moved there in 1205. During the 13th and 14th centuries a series of princes of the Orbelian clan built churches which served as the burial site for the family. The monastery became the center of the Syunik bishopric. The church of St. Karapet (the 9th-10th centuries), which has come down to us in ruins, is the most ancient monument of Noravank. The nearest and grandest church completed in 1339 is the Astvatsatsin (“Mother of God”), also called Burtelashen in honor of Prince Burtel Orbelian. Lunch in a local restaurant in Noravank. Return back to the capital city. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. Day 6: Yerevan – Ashtarak – Saghmosavank – AmberdBreakfast at the hotel in Yerevan. Start the tour to Ashtarak, one of the oldest towns in Armenia. Continue the tour to Saghmosavank. The monastery complex of Saghmosavank is situated in the village of the same name in the Ashtarak district. Continue tour to Amberd fortress. Amberd is a fortress complex and means “a fortress in the clouds in Armenian - a fitting name given for its elevation at 2,300m on the slopes of the Mount Aragats. The fortress was founded in the 7th century A. D. The church, built in 1026 by the architect Vahram Pahlavuni, is slightly down the hill from the fortress. Drive to Yerevan capital city. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. Day 7: Yerevan – Garni – Gueghard – Parajanov Museum Breakfast at the hotel. Visiting of the Hellenic – Pagan temple of Garni (1 A.D.). Garni - the citadel and pagan temple of Garni is a picturesque monument of the Hellenistic period and an impressive piece of ancient Armenian architecture. It was built in the first century A.D. by the Armenian King Tiridates and was dedicated to a heathen god, probably to Mithra, the god of the sun whose figure stood in the depth of the sanctuary. After proclaiming Christianity as a state religion in Armenia in 301, the temple was probably used as a royal summer residence. Northeast of Garni, higher up the gorge of the Azat river, there is a magnificent monument of medieval Armenian architecture— Gueghard monastery (13th century). During the lunch in Garni the tourists will have the opportunity to see the Armenian national bread (lavash) baking as well barbeque making process. Gueghard is another incredible ancient Armenian monastery partly carved out of a mountain and is also listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Though the monastery was around before 4th century, the main cathedral was built in 1215. The entrance of the compound is surrounded by the high walls on three sides and mountain on the other. Outside the monastery complex there are some caves which have a bunch of little cave rooms and are quite interesting. Return to Yerevan. Visit to Sergei Parajanov Museum which is one of the most popular museums in Yerevan. Sergei Parajanov is an Armenian director and artist. He was the author of several film-masterpieces which brought him world praise. The basis of the museum collection consists of more than 600 works of Parajanov. In the museum Parajanov's own artistic and display principles are used. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan.
Day 8: Yerevan - Dilijan – Haghartsin – Goshavank –Alaverdi Breakfast at the hotel, check our from the hotel. Drive to the mountainous town of Dilijan which entices people with its unforgettable beauty and mild climate. The city stretches on the banks of Aghstev River, surrounded with mountains and forests. Dilijan has the fame of health resort. The warm sun, fresh air and natural spas have great healing influence on people. Dilijan is also rich in interesting architectural monuments. Haghartsin monastery situated in the woodlands of Dilijan represents an indescribable example of blend of nature with architecture. It was founded in 10-11th centuries, though new buildings were added in 12-13th centuries. Now it consists of St. Grigor, St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), St. Stepanos churches and other economical buildings. The refectory due to its skillful architectural composition is of great interest. The huge oak tree, which is almost at the age of the monastery, completes the whole scene. Continue the tour to Goshavank monastery which was founded by the famous medieval scientist, fabulist Mkhitar Gosh. The complex consists of several religious and secular buildings. The unrivalled khachkar put in front of the one-naved basilica is created by the skillful master Poghos in 1291. Goshavank used to be one of the most famous religious and cultural centers in medieval Armenia. Overnight at the hotel in Alaverdi. Day 9: Alaverdi - Haghpat – Sanahin Monasteries/Armenian-Georgian Border Bereakfast at the hotel in Alaverdi. Start tour to Haghpat (10-13th century) and Sanahin Monasteries which are listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. The architectural complexes of Sanahin and Haghpat are among the outstanding works of medieval Armenian architecture. The monasteries are situated in the north of Armenia. Sanahin was an important literary and educational centre in medieval times. It was founded in 966. One of the most beautiful monasteries Haghpat was founded later in around 976. Haghpat was also a major literary center in the middle ages. One can never describe these monasteries by words, one should see them. Drive to Armenian-Georgian border. Overnight at the hotel in Tbilisi. Day 10:Tbilisi Breakfast. Full day sightseeing of Tbilisi including visits to the golden collection of the State museum; Narikala Fortress (the 4th – 20th cc main citadel of the city); Sioni - cathedral of the 6th-7th c. Church of the Virgin; Metekhi (12th c) – (cross-domed church); Anchiskhati (6th c) - most ancient basilicas in Tbilisi; Mount Mtatsminda & pantheon of famous writers and public figures, Sulphur baths, bakery & smithy. Overnight in Tbilisi. Day 11: Tbilisi – Mtskheta - Ananuri – Gudauri Breakfast. Drive to the mountainous region of Georgia - Mtiuleti by the historic “Georgian
Military Highway” - the main transport artery linking Georgia with Russia. First stop of the ay will be sacred Mtskheta, the ancient capital of eastern Georgia. Georgia’s conversion to Christianity occurred in Mtskheta in 337 AD and it is considered to be one of Georgia’s most important religious centers. Guest can visit several of its most historic monuments including the beautiful Jvari church (6th-7th cc), perched on a cliff overlooking the city; Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th c), the first Christian church and the Samtavro monastery complex (12th c), Pushing north visit Ananuri architectural complex (16th-17th cc) built by the warring dukes of Aragvi in an attempt to control the main road. The tour continues towards the village of Gudauri, with free time on arrival. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Gudauri. Day 12: Gudauri – Kazbegi – Gudauri Breakfast. Continue journey up and north through alpine meadows and mountain passes littered with medieval watchtowers. Walking tour to Gergety Trinity Church with views of an extinct, snow-capped Mount Kazbek - 5047 meters. Picnic lunch at a nice spot. Return to Gudauri for dinner and overnight. Day 13: Gudauri - Gori – Tbilisi Breakfast. From the mountains return to Kartli, the heart of the country, known for its agriculture and architectural monuments. First stop on this day is Stalinàs museum located in Gori. Then drive to Uplistsikhe, an unusual medieval cave town that developed over hundreds of years starting in the first millennium BC. At its height it was an important trade centre occupying 22 acres. In afternoon drive to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.
